Travelling along the Bergensbanen (Bergen line) between Oslo and Bergen by train is an incredible journey that highlights Norway's stunning landscapes while providing a comfortable and enjoyable mode of transport. This trip is often cited as one of the most scenic train rides that you can experience, featuring rolling hills, vibrant forests, and serene lakes. At any time of year - we experienced it in Winter - this train adventure, for that is what it is, allows you to fully appreciate Norway's natural splendour.

TL;DR

Telling the story of our 6.5hr trip from Oslo to Bergen ahead of boarding the Havila Voyages return cruise from Bergen to Kirkennes. Includes tips to ensure the most enjoyment of the 500km ride across some of Norway's most breath taking landscapes. Beginning at sea level, rising as high as 1,222m, and then returning to sea level - it truly is an awesome journey. I'll let the photos at the bottom of the blog do the talking. I've updated with input from facebook comments - marked up in red.

Booking

All great experiences start with good planning. For me its all part of the adventure. Being prepared and knowing that you've got the best price for your choice is the start of a happy holiday. We booked direct with vy.no. If you don't speak Norwegian, either allow your browser to translate, or click on top right Menu and change the language. The train we booked was the F4, and the departure times are clearly illustrated. Availability shows 120 days in advance, and booking of tickets is allowed 90 days in advance. From experience tickets can be snapped up quite quickly. Seats are reserved - so no rush and there are places for luggage storage. Different carriages are also on offer - Standard, Plus and Family - each offering their own amenities. Some trains even have a quiet carriage. Its easy to speak an agent at vy.no or drop them an email, for help and advice. In addition, the vy.no website also has a good FAQ section.

The Oslo to Bergen Train Experience

Yes - you can easily fly between Oslo and Bergen - its a very popular route - and takes just under an hour - but you'd miss what many consider a highlight; the journey itself.

Your adventure begins at Oslo Central Station, a bustling hub filled with commuters and travelers. As the train leaves the station, settle into your spacious seat, mind though - it is a popular route and can be very busy at times, and prepare for a journey filled with breathtaking views. The trains are designed with large windows, ensuring you have unobstructed views of Norway’s varied landscapes.

Onboard, you can find many amenities that enhance your experience. Many trains offer free Wi-Fi, power outlets, coffee and and cafe rather than dining options. With these conveniences, you can relax with a good book or take in the ever-changing scenery beyond the window.

Left or Right? Scenic Highlights Along the Route

In my opinion it didn't matter - from a seat you can see in both directions through the large windows, and there is plenty to see. However general recommendation is to take a left hand seat when travelling west for the best views.

Foggy lake with a mountain and forest backdrop, reflecting trees and sky. Overcast mood with calm water and a few buildings visible.

As the train departs Oslo, the first part of the journey takes you through beautiful rural landscapes. You’ll pass shimmering lakes and rolling hills dotted with traditional Norwegian farms and charming houses.

Snow-covered church with a tall steeple, surrounded by parked cars and a cemetery. Overcast sky and mountains in the background. Calm winter scene.

As the train ascends into the mountains, the scenery transforms dramatically. Glacial rivers wind through lush valleys, and jagged peaks offer a stunning backdrop. A focal point of the journey is the Hallingskeid summit, standing at 1,222 meters above sea level. Here, the railroad reaches its highest point, surrounded by the awe-inspiring Norwegian mountains. In winter when we travelled - it really was picture postcard scenery.

Along the route, you will also encounter varied ecosystems. Depending on the season, you might see vibrant green meadows, golden autumn leaves, or pristine winter snow. Wildlife enthusiasts can look out for reindeer, elk, and diverse bird species such as eagles and swans.

The Beautiful Town of Flåm

Halfway through the journey, the train makes a brief stop in Myrdal, where passengers can change to the Flåm railway and travel down to Flåm. Its a picturesque village nestled at the edge of the Aurlandsfjord. With a population of about 450 people, Flåm is a serene stop filled with friendly locals and breathtaking views.

We didn't get off, But if time were to allow, I'm told to take the chance to experience the Flåm Railway, one of the steepest railways in the world. The train climbs from Flåm to Myrdal, ascending about 865 meters in just 20 kilometers.

Tips for the best experience

  • Book early: This route is popular year-round, especially during summer and winter holidays.

  • Bring snacks and water: While the café car is convenient, having your own provisions can enhance the experience.

  • Charge your devices: Outlets are available, but bring a power bank just in case.

  • Don’t blink: You might miss a waterfall, a wild reindeer, or a stunning glacier in the blink of an eye.

Arrival in Bergen

As the train approaches Bergen, the landscape shifts back to coastal beauty. Bergen, known as the gateway to the fjords, is rich in history and culture. Once you step off the train, you are welcomed by a vibrant city that combines its historical charm with a modern atmosphere.

The famous Bryggen Wharf is a must-visit. This UNESCO World Heritage site features colorful wooden houses that date back to the Hanseatic period. The wharf is perfect for a leisurely stroll and offers excellent photo opportunities. For a breathtaking panoramic view of the city and surrounding fjords, take a ride on the Fløyen funicular, which climbs to an elevation of 320 meters.

Final Thoughts on the Journey

Travelling by train from Oslo to Bergen is more than just a means of transportation; it is a memorable experience that connects you to Norway's natural and cultural treasures. Each turn of the track reveals new and stunning vistas that will stay with you long after the journey ends.

Remember to plan ahead by booking your tickets in advance and checking the train schedule. Get your camera ready, find your seat, and prepare for a travel experience that showcases the very best of Norway!
