Family Fishing - Iceland
As a family we all remember how we enjoyed a family friendly sea fishing trip from Reykjavik - though to be honest - my memory is of how cold it was - even mid summer.
TL;DR
This was a family friendly fishing trip that we did a few years ago - not one of those professional ones that are out for 8 hours catching big game fish. It matched what we were looking for and as a bonus we caught some fish, which were put on the BBQ and we ate as we returned back into port.
All Dressed Up
Putting on the orange jackets and trousers was optional - but I wanted to look the part and help keep the chill off. The sea was calm - so in reality a good jumper would have done the trick. The captain smirked when he saw us appear all suited up. It did however get everyone into the right vibe.
The Fishing Experience
We didn't go far out of the harbour before dropping anchor in a sheltered area of shallow water - where we could literally see the fish below. There was no casting, nothing complicated - just dropping the line and hoping.
The crew quickly got everyone set up - sharing essential tips for catching cod. This seemed to be limited to keep the bait off the bottom or the crabs will take it. Everyone started to get more excited and competitive as the first of the bites started and soon after fish of all different sizes were being landed in quick succession. For the children, especially those who were fishing for the first time, there were screams of excitement and delight.
Food
After a very quick 45mins of fishing we were done. The crew began preparing the freshly caught cod for dinner. When I say prepare - the fish were very roughly filleted, one side coming off, then the other - with around 50% of the fish going overboard for the waiting seagulls. I'd like to say the smell from the BBQ filled the air with fishy aromas - but that wasn't the reality. The potatoes needed to have been cooked a little longer and the fish seasoned. Lots of butter, salt and pepper though brought it to life. It was rough and ready - everyone with paper plates sitting on the deck - who knew that boiled potatoes, butter and freshly caught cod could taste so good.
We got a nice view of Reykjavik from the boat as we returned slowly to port.
Unfortunately I can't remember who we booked with - I know not very useful. May have been these guys - looks very familiar;
But if you find yourself in Reykjavik during the summer and have an afternoon free - I'd highly recommend heading down to the docks to see if you can find this mini adventure, or at least get out on the water.
