  • Essential Items to Pack for Maximum Comfort on Long Flights

Long flights can be a hassle, but they don’t have to be uncomfortable if you are prepared. Whether you're heading out for a business meeting or a well-deserved vacation, packing the right items can transform your travel experience. TL;DR These are my key items to include in my carry-on to ensure I remain as comfortable as one can throughout your journey. Note - you can't control everything! Travel Pillow A travel pillow is an absolute must for a long flight. However, there are travel pillows, and there are travel pillows. We've all had the u-tube filled with polystyrene balls or blow up with little to no support. I upgraded to a blow up that you could rest your head in - I wasn't allowed to use it on Etihad for some reason and shortly after it let me down with a leak. My latest is a wrap around that actually supports my neck, so with a little recline - you are all good, and aids restful sleep. Blanket Airplane cabins can often be cold and uncomfortable. A lightweight blanket is an excellent addition to your packing list. It can keep you warm, but also doubles as a makeshift pillow or privacy screen for those much-needed naps. I also find a jumper or jacket can provide the same. Noise-Cancelling Headphones When I first could afford these - they were a God send. Drowning out the persistent hum of the airplane engines is fantastic - if only they could do the same for some of my fellow passengers. However they are worth the investment, and I wouldn't be without them. They can help create a peaceful environment, allowing you to listen to music or podcasts or simply relax in silence - a lot of the time I don't have anything playing. Eye Mask I'm told that an eye mask can make all the difference when trying to sleep on an airplane. Its not for me. The idea of waking up blind isn't something that I could get used to. Snacks 100% required. Airplane food is usually fine for me and there is enough of it. But sometimes it can be a let down. A few snacks can be useful. I like to raid the lounge on the way out - but then its usually just crisps and a can of drink. I did once see a guy fill a plastic Tupperware full of sandwiches as he left the lounge, and another fill a flask full of expensive whiskey - I wouldn't recommend doing either. Reusable Water Bottle Staying hydrated is vital during long flights because cabin air can be quite dry. A reusable water bottle, which can be filled after security, ensures you stay hydrated throughout your flight. Comfortable Clothing Similar to the blanket - staying at the right temperature is important for a pleasant journey. Choose loose-fitting clothes made from breathable materials that allow for movement. Layering is also beneficial, as temperatures in the cabin can fluctuate - warm when they want you to sleep , colder when coming into land, and your body might not be in sync with the cabin crew's wises. Don't overlook the power of cozy socks to keep your feet warm—a small detail that can enhance your overall comfort during the flight. Personal Hygiene Items Feeling fresh during a long flight can significantly improve your travel experience. Pack a small toiletry bag with essentials like a toothbrush, toothpaste, facial wipes, deodorant, and hand sanitiser. These items can make you feel rejuvenated. A simple refresh can lift your mood, while facial wipes can freshen your skin after hours in the dry cabin air. Entertainment Keeping yourself entertained during a long flight can help the hours fly by. Download movies, TV shows, or e-books onto your device well before your trip. If you prefer physical media, consider packing a couple of books or magazines that interest you. Final Thoughts By packing these essential items, you can boost your comfort and enjoy your journey more fully - you don't need to use them, but they are great if they are there. The next time you're gearing up for a long flight, use the suggestions in this post as a pre-flight check list and do what suits you. Happy travels.

  • How To Fly and Respect Fellow Passengers

Flying can be both exciting and challenging - but so much easier for all involved if you don't act like a dick and remember that good manners and consideration for others should always come first. TL;DR It's not difficult to be a considerate traveller and create a pleasant journey for everyone - which makes me question why people act so differently on planes. Understanding the Importance of Respect when Travelling Stepping onto a plane means sharing a confined space with people just like you and me. Like you and me, each passenger has their own reasons for travelling, whether for business, leisure, or family visits. As a traveller, it's essential to recognise that it's not all about you, and understand that your comfort should not come at the expense of others. Respecting fellow passengers fosters a positive environment that benefits everyone on board. When you are respectful of queues, the flight crew, and your fellow travellers, you can make the experience bearable, or even enhance the overall experience for everyone involved. Respect the Queues One area where travellers sometimes appear inconsiderate is during boarding and exiting the plane. The plane isn't leaving until everyone is on, and you're probably going to get caught up in passport control or baggage collection anyway when you travel. The Boarding Process During boarding, always follow the airline's group order - there is no point standing beside the desk to be the first of your boarding group to board. By waiting your turn, you not only set a great example but also help make the boarding process smoother for all. Frankly - I don't understand why the back of the plane isn't loaded first - would make boarding so much easier. Deplaning Etiquette Patience is equally important when exiting. Just because the plane has landed - it doesn't mean you can take your seat belt off to grab your luggage, or try to get a little further ahead. Allowing passengers in the rows ahead of you to exit first shows respect for their space and time. Respect the Crew Flight attendants work hard to ensure all passengers have a comfortable and safe journey. As a traveller, it's vital to treat them with respect. Communication is Key Always be polite and considerate when interacting with the crew. A simple "please" and "thank you" can create a positive interaction. If you have special requests, like dietary restrictions or extra amenities, communicate them respectfully and clearly. Understanding Their Role Remember that flight crew are there to assist you while also ensuring everyone’s safety. If they ask you to follow certain protocols or guidelines, be sure to comply. Respect Your Fellow Passengers Being considerate of those around you is the most significant part of being a good business traveler. Noise Levels Wear headphone - don't be that person that watches tiktoks using the speaker on their phone. To avoid disrupting others, use headphones for movies or music and keep conversations at a low volume. Personal Space Airplanes can be cramped, and personal space is limited. Avoid reclining your seat too far back, especially during meal service, since this can invade the space of the passenger behind you. And don't be weird - like this fella. Sharing the Armrest Armrests can be a matter of contention on flights. If you find yourself sharing one, be considerate. If the passenger next to you is using it, try to position yourself comfortably without encroaching on their space. This small act of courtesy can go a long way in ensuring both passengers enjoy the flight. Final Thoughts Travelling should be enjoyable for everyone on board. By respecting the queues, the crew, and your fellow passengers, you contribute to a nicer atmosphere in the skies. The next time you board, consider how your actions impact those around you. A little courtesy can significantly enhance the travel experience for everyone. By embracing these principles, you can ensure that your business travels are successful and respectful. Happy travels!

  • Explore Tromsø: A Self-Guided Itinerary

On day 5 of the Norwegian Coastal Route, at around 14:15 in the afternoon, you arrive into the small city of Tromso, known as the "Gateway to the Arctic". The ship docks at the modern port building - quite literally in the city centre. While organised tours often offer a brief glimpse into what this stunning location has to offer, you are perfectly placed to explore it on your own and you can tailor your adventure to your own interests. You've got 4 hours to explore - so make sure you have got a plan as 4hours won't be long enough. TL;DR I've visited Tromso regularly over the last 10 years. This is what my wife and I did when we first visited when sailing the Norwegian Coastal Route in 2024, and loved the brief time we had there. Grab an Uber and Head to the Cable Car As you get off the ship into the terminal building - get your phone out and order an Uber. The cost should be approx 200 Nok (£15 or $20). This quick ride saves you time and allows you to bypass the lengthy queues to get onto the Havila organised tour.. While crossing the bridge, take a moment to enjoy the stunning views of Tromsø's waterfront and the majestic mountains surrounding you. The bridge itself stands 1,133 meters long and provides a fantastic vantage point. Stunning view of Tromsø bridge At the cable car station, purchase your tickets and focus on the thrilling experience that awaits. The ride gives you panoramic views that are simply breathtaking, with the city and fjords stretching out below. Enjoy the Summit Once you reach the summit, take time to soak in the spectacular scenery. The panoramic views reveal the dramatic landscape of the Arctic. Take photos that capture the beauty of the area and consider spending time on one of the short hiking trails available at the top. Its lovely at any time of year. There is a cafe and toilets available, and shelter from the elements if the weather is inclement. Walk Back to the Town After your summit adventure, descend the cable car and if you are feeling energetic consider walking back to the city instead of taking the Uber. This leisurely 30 minute walk across the bridge not only provides a different perspective but also allows you to connect more deeply with the beautiful surroundings. I particularly enjoyed getting an insight into Norwegian every day life, as we walked through the housing toward the bridge. Just before the bridge you'll see the Tromso cathedral. The walk way on the bridge is protected from the traffic. And as you cross any concerns that you were a little far from the ship will resolve themselves. Its probably around 16:00 by now, with another couple of hours available. Back in Tromso Tromso is really not that big, and ideal for having a stroll through the town - my personal highlights were; The large acquarium in the window of Restaurant Skirri - where we also had a quick drink. Raketten Bar & Pølse - grab a quick hotdog or coffee at what may be Norway's smallest bar., where on a cold day there will be a fire outside. Continue your stroll as you make your way to the last stop - Ølhallen, Tromsø's oldest pub. Keep an eye out for quaint shops and cozy cafes lining your route. These local stops can be perfect for picking up souvenirs or indulging in regional treats.. Visit Ølhallen Brewery This brewery is well-known among both locals and tourists for its impressive selection of craft beers brewed right in Norway. Upon entering Ølhallen, you'll notice the cozy atmosphere that invites you to relax after a day of exploration. It's the ideal spot to unwind with a cold drink. The bartenders are passionate about their craft and happy to make recommendations that highlight local brews and seasonal favorites. For example, sampling a pint of Mack Beer, crafted by Norway's oldest brewery, allows you to experience a true taste of Tromsø. Welcoming sign at Ølhallen Brewery Taking a moment, or as long as you have left, to enjoy a beer lets you reflect on your day's adventures while soaking in the local vibe. Make sure you left enough time for the short walk back to the ship. My wife asked didn't realise how small a small beer might be.... Your Afternoon of Discovery in Tromsø Exploring Tromsø on your own gives you the chance to immerse yourself in its charm and beauty. You get to do it your way - with this self-guided itinerary, you can navigate popular attractions without the stress of crowded tours. From breathtaking views atop the Fjellheisen to the welcoming warmth of Ølhallen Brewery, your day is sure to be filled with unforgettable experiences. Whether you are visiting for the first time or returning to rediscover its charm, Tromsø has something to enchant every traveller. So grab that Uber and embark on your unforgettable adventure! Final Thoughts Investing in a little time to do some research and creating a plan for your visit to Tromso, and other port stops on the Norwegian Coastal Route, is time well spent if you want to make the most of your port visit. Here is my northbound recommendation; https://www.retiredcormac.co.uk/post/explore-tromsø-a-self-guided-itinerary-for-the-northern-bound-havila-visitor We love Tromsø that much we also make sure and visit at night - it's a student city so the bars are open late and the city is alive well after 00:00 on the southbound visit. Just make sure you get yourself back to the ship in plenty of time. Eats We've eaten in a few different restaurants in Tromsø - there are many. Food and drinks are good. • The Benefits of Using a Credit Card Abroad

Managing your finances while travelling can be a daunting task. This is where a credit card can become your best travel companion. TL;DR There are various benefits of using a credit card while on holiday, including the ability to pay in local currency, the advantages of a transaction fee-free card, insurance on purchased items, opportunities to accumulate points, access to discounts, and more Pay in Local Currency One of the most significant advantages of using a debit or credit card while travelling is the ability to pay in the local currency, without having to carry the local currency. When you use your credit card abroad, you can avoid the hassle of exchanging cash at unfavourable rates. By using the right credit cards you will get competitive exchange rates, allowing you to make purchases without worrying about hidden fees or poor conversion rates. Transaction Fee-Free Cards Another essential aspect to consider when using a credit card abroad is the potential for transaction fees. Many credit cards charge foreign transaction fees, which can add up quickly and eat into your travel budget. However, there are several credit cards available that do not charge these fees, allowing you to make purchases without incurring additional costs. Make sure you are carrying the correct card when on holiday Insurance on Purchased Items Travelling sometimes involves making significant purchases, whether it's a new camera for capturing memories or a beautiful piece of local art. Many credit cards offer purchase protection and extended warranty benefits, which can provide peace of mind while travelling. If an item you purchased is damaged or stolen, your credit card may cover the cost of replacement or repair. Accumulate Points and Rewards Using a credit card while travelling also presents an excellent opportunity to accumulate points and rewards. These points can be redeemed for various benefits, including free flights, hotel stays, and even cash back. Take Advantage of Discounts In addition to earning points, many credit cards offer exclusive discounts and deals for cardholders. These can include discounts on hotels, car rentals, and attractions which can help you save money during your trip. By taking advantage of these discounts, you can stretch your travel budget further and enjoy more of what your destination has to offer. The Importance of Paying Off Your Balance While the benefits of using a credit card abroad are numerous, it is crucial to remember the importance of managing your spend and resulting credit responsibly. One of the most significant pitfalls of using a credit card is the potential for accumulating debt due to high-interest rates. To avoid this, it is essential to pay off your balance in full each month. By doing so, you can enjoy all the benefits of using a credit card without falling into the trap of high-interest charges. Conclusion In conclusion, using a credit card while travelling abroad can significantly enhance your holiday experience. From the ability to pay in local currency to the benefits of transaction fee-free cards, insurance on purchases, opportunities to accumulate points, and access to exclusive discounts, the advantages are clear. However, it is essential to manage your credit responsibly by paying off your balance each month to avoid significant interest charges. Happy travels!

  • Tips to Avoid Getting Hangry When Travelling

Hungry + Angry = Hangry - which is a greater than the sum of its parts and annoyingly easy to avoid with a little pre-planning. Feeling "hangry" can ruin the enjoyment of travelling, it can kill that holiday vibe, and be the first step on a slippery slope. To help you stay cheerful and fueled during your travels, here are some really simple tips to avoid getting hangry and to keep your energy high. Never Go To The Airport Hungry If you are already hungry when the inevitable frustrations of travelling materialise then you are already hangry. Instead, eat before you set off that way you are at least fuelled and unlikely to be hangry unless the delay is significant. Add time for breakfast, or a stop for breakfast in your plans for the day of travel. Something prepared the night before - like over night oats or simply a bagel or cereal in the morning will do the trick. If that fails a quick and timely stop at McDonalds especially for the children can be a good start to the holiday. Always Carry Snacks One of the most effective ways to prevent those hangry moments is simple: always have snacks on hand. No matter if you're flying, driving, or wandering a new city, healthy snacks can save the day. For instance - Granola Bars: Easy to carry and packed with energy. By packing snacks, you can quickly boost your energy whenever hunger arises. Don’t Allow Yourself to Get Overly Hungry Travelling can make time fly, and it’s easy to forget to eat. However, letting your hunger build can lead to irritability. To tackle this, and it might sound a little too obvious - is to set reminders on your phone, and then eat. Aim to eat small snacks every three to four hours. Even something simple, like a piece of fruit, can help maintain your blood sugar levels. When we rafted in Sweden many years ago the guide told us that when we got stuck on the rocks, not to panic, but to put the kettle on and have some food. That way we would be properly fueled for the frustrating efforts that it would take to break free. Good advice. Have a Plan for When You Land After a long journey, you might arrive at your destination feeling drained and hungry. It helps to have a food plan ready. Before leaving, look for restaurants or cafes near your arrival point. Think about supper and whether you need something for the morning - and grab something simple at the airport shop before leaving - prices in arrivals tend not to be as extortionate as air side. Stay Hydrated Don't forget about hydration. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, and it can feel like hunger. Make a habit of drinking water throughout your trip. Carrying a reusable water bottle makes it easier to maintain hydration. Many public spaces have water refill stations, so make sure to fill up frequently. Snack Smart During Layovers Layovers can mean long hours without food, or balancing food choices with costly airport options, leading to hunger and irritability. To prevent this, be prepared. Pack snacks or explore healthy dining options at the airport. Listen to Your Body Pay attention to your own hunger signals. It’s important to eat when you start to feel the slightest hunger rather than waiting until you’re starving. If you sense your stomach grumbling, grab a snack right away. This small change can vastly improve how you feel during your travels. Travel Bliss Awaits - If You Aren't Hangry Travel should be a delightful experience, not one marred by hunger and frustration. By implementing these tips to avoid getting hangry, your adventures can be enjoyable and stress-free. Always pack snacks, eat regularly, start your day with a nutritious breakfast, and have food plans ready when you arrive. Stay hydrated and make wise dining decisions to enhance your travels. With a bit of preparation, you're sure to maintain high energy and a positive mood during your journey. Happy travels!

  • Master Holiday Planning to Create Unforgettable Holidays

Holidays are often seen as a time to relax, unwind, and escape the daily grind. However, the truth is that good holidays don’t just happen; they require thoughtful planning and a bit of skill. By investing time in researching your destination, planning your days, yet remaining flexible, you can ensure that your holidays are the best they can be. The Importance of Research Before you set off on holiday, it’s essential to do your homework. Researching the area you plan to visit can significantly enhance your experience. Understanding the local culture, attractions, and events happening during your stay will allow you to make informed decisions about how to spend your time. Start by looking into the must-see attractions in the area. Are there any historical sites, natural wonders, feast days, or unique experiences that you shouldn’t miss? Websites, travel blogs, and forums can provide valuable insights into what to expect. Additionally, consider checking local tourism websites for information on events, festivals, or seasonal activities that may be taking place during your visit. By gathering this information, you can create a list of potential activities and sights to see, ensuring that you don’t miss out on anything special. Planning Your Holiday Days Once you have a good understanding of your destination, it’s time to plan your days. While spontaneity can lead to unexpected adventures, having a rough itinerary can help you make the most of your time. Instead of waking up each day and asking, "What will we do today?" take the time to outline your activities in advance. Consider the type of day you want to have - a relaxing beach day, a cultural excursion, or a culinary adventure? Make a list of activities that align with your interests and prioritize them based on your preferences. If you’re visiting popular attractions, be sure to check for ticket availability and book in advance. Many popular sites can sell out quickly, especially during peak seasons. By planning ahead, you can secure your spot and avoid disappointment. A notable example of this was Alcatraz - I set an alarm for the middle of the night to get those tickets. Exploring Your Destination If you’re on a longer trip, it’s beneficial to get your bearings with a walking tour or bus tour. These tours can provide a great overview of the area, allowing you to see key sights and learn about the local history and culture. This initial exploration can help you decide which places you’d like to spend more time at later. Embracing Flexibility While planning is crucial, it’s equally important to remain flexible. Sometimes, the best experiences come from unexpected opportunities that arise during your travels. Whether it’s a local festival, a chance encounter with a friendly local, or a hidden gem you stumble upon, being open to spontaneity can lead to unforgettable memories. To strike a balance between planning and flexibility, consider leaving some time in your itinerary for unplanned activities. This could be a free afternoon or an evening where you can explore without a set agenda. Additionally, be prepared to adjust your plans if something doesn’t go as expected. If the weather changes or a particular attraction is closed, having a flexible mindset will allow you to pivot and make the most of the situation. Booking with Caution When planning your holiday, it’s wise to book trips and experiences that offer cancellation options. This strategy allows you to lock in discounts and availability while still giving you the freedom to change your mind later. Reflecting on Your Experience After your holiday, take some time to reflect on what worked well and what didn’t. This reflection is crucial for improving your approach to future trips. Consider keeping a travel journal where you can jot down your thoughts, experiences, and lessons learned. Conclusion Creating unforgettable memories during your holidays requires a blend of planning, research, and flexibility. By taking the time to understand your destination, planning your days, and remaining open to spontaneity, you can ensure that your holidays are not only enjoyable but also filled with meaningful experiences. Remember to book activities with cancellation options, allowing you to secure your plans while still having the freedom to adapt. Finally, reflect on your experiences to refine your approach for future trips. With these strategies in mind, you’ll be well on your way to mastering the art of holiday planning and creating memories that will last a lifetime. Happy travels!
